INFO

Probably the most talented German player ever. Siffling was heavy smoker and drinker, tried always to avoid physical contact but except of that, he didn't have weak points. Playing as centre forward but he was coming deeper to get the ball, he was unstoppable. He could score from all angles, all distances, lob the keeper, score from penalty, from free kick, directly from corner and he was great technician, dribbler, solid in heading abilities, good passing range especially long balls on the wing. His home club was the SV Waldhof Mannheim. He was one of the first football player in his club, who was appointed to the national team (before there were national handball players from this club). Siffling Huben was born in the street, there where five years earlier founded the SV Waldhof. He played 31 games 1934-1938 for the German national football team, scoring 17 goals. His biggest success was the third place at the World Cup in Italy. Prof.Dr. Otto Mink sat in the opening match of the DFB-Elf at the World Championships 1934 in Italy against Belgium on 27 May on the 22-year-old debutant Otto Siffling. "Wood", the Waldhof Jack, convinced the strict system trainer (he led the team in the successful World Cup system) in the 5-2 success not only because of his hit, as fully as he still in all the following World Cup games (Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Austria) was used. Siffling is still the player with the most national appeals for Waldhof Mannheim. With his ten goals he scored in international matches in 1937, he was among the players who had the largest share of the glory of the Breslau-Elf, who won 8-0 against Denmark in 1937 in Breslau. Alone against the Danes Siffling met five times on the head. On 16 Discharged in May 1937 in Breslau game against Denmark established a legendary reputation of the DFB-Elf, which lasted for decades and even after the sensational win the World Cup title in 1954 by the national coach Sepp Herberger was frequently cited as an example. The formation of the "Breslau-Elf" was: Jacob Janes, Münzenberg copper, gold Brunner, Kitzinger, Lehner, Gellesch, Siffling, Szepan and Urban. A major tactical variant was stabilize the position and role of Otto Siffling in the storm center. He did not play like it was used as an advanced "wedge striker" in the middle attack, but hung back, lured to the opponent's defensive stopper from the center and distributed the ball to the wings fast. Made it possible to cover the gaping Danes him quickly then further into the spaces to advance themselves and to come to a conclusion. This was only possible tactical variant, since Otto Siffling an outstanding technician with a strong combination gift and it was also understood the scoring. He was bound by its technical and tactical versatility to any classical position. He was one of Alfredo di Stefano thirties. At the beginning of the 1939/1940 season the club joined Otto Siffling first time and closed at SW Champion Wormatia Worms, but died shortly afterwards in October 1939 with 27 years of pleurisy. He played his last international game on 24 April 1938 in Frankfurt am Main in the 1-1 draw against Portugal. From December 1938 to February 1939 Otto Siffling was missing in the forest Höfer lineup. The reasons for this were initially hidden. For the national team, which meanwhile had taken with another woods Seppl Herberger Höfer, was "wooden" no longer rely as well. At 1:1 on 24 April 1938 in Frankfurt against Portugal - Siffling marked a quarter of an hour before closing the equalizing goal - he had his last appearance in the Eagle jersey. After a 0-4 in the derby of VfR Mannheim (March 1939) Siffling for his feeble way of playing has been criticized. All too often allowed himself the striker with his hands resting on his hips, now timeouts on the court. The breathing problems caused by pain in the chest area were getting worse. Siffling went to the doctor, although he - as a witness later described - "with sunken cheeks emaciated, coughing and shivering, yellow-green in the face" ran through the area. "Pleurisy" was the diagnosis. "Des is G'schichten ä damn stupid. Hopefully it keeps the wood from, '"said Hans Jacob, goalkeeper of Bayern Munich and the legendary" Breslau-Elf "when he learned during an international match in Sofia travel the fate of his former teammates. On the way home, the train had stopped in Belgrade maintenance, bought Empire coach Herberger, the newspaper and read his consternation players ". Died, the national player Siffling" Siffling, who scored in 31 international matches 17 goals, only 27 years old. It was the 20th October 1939, and in the end everything went very quickly. The doctors at Deaconess Hospital in Mannheim could do nothing more for the "timber" to do for too long he had been carrying with him his disease left untreated. Three days later, 2,000 people lined the cemetery Käfertal to prove Otto Siffling their last respects. The players of SV Waldhof - including SIFFLING brothers Henry and Oscar, who had also made the leap into the "First" - appeared in feature clothes, a trumpet blew the song from the "good fellow". Laid out in his white dress uniform of the Olympic athletes of 1936 he lay there, his cap pulled down over his forehead pressed to save the pitiful sight of the mourners. In June 1977, the grain on the road "Old Waldhof", was raised in the Siffling renamed Otto Siffling Street.
