Hopkins was a side or centre back who spent most of his career at Fulham, playing 257 matches from 1981 to 1988. He played also for some other clubs including Crystal Palace and Reading. He capped 16 times for Wales, mainly in his early career. He retired in 2000.
Hopkins was a strong defender and hard tackler but still a fair player. A part of his defensive duties, he liked to push forward when he had the chance, showing good speed and decent dribbling. Otherwise he tried to deliver the ball forward with pinpoint passes from the back. He may have become a good player but shamefully he had his peak at a very young age.
