INFO:

Carlo Ceresoli is legendary and unlucky Italian keeper. He was in mid 30's regular 1st choice keeper for NT team than just before the World Cup '34 he sustained an injury and could not take part on WC. Instead of him Combi got the fame. To make the story unbelievable, the same thing happened 4 years later :!: Again he was 1st choice for Italy and again he suffered an injury before the tournament and this tame Olivieri got the fame. Incredible. Ceresoli was excellent keeper with great positioning and agility, very brave and with a lot acrobatic saves, especially from the ground. He grew up in Ardens of Bergamo, at Atalanta came in 1928 with which he began in the National Division January 13, 1929 at 18 in a season which culminated in the relegation of the team (the people of Bergamo would then finished fourth in Serie B in its last season), went to Inter, which in the 1932-1933 season (where the team was a finalist for the Central European Cup with Austria Vienna), 1933-34 and 1934-35 he was second in Serie A. He was then sold to Bologna (which also won the tournament at the Paris Exposition and of which, after the introduction of the numbering on the shirts in the 1938-1939 season, became the first "number one") where he graduated with two-time champion of Italy, in 1936-1937 and in 1938-1939 (but where in 1938 he acquired a crack in the arm bone, then to move to Genoa, who came fifth in the 1939-1940 season, ended his career as a high level in Juventus, which won the Italian Cup. He played in the national team coach at the time of Pozzo, debuted Nov. 14, 1934 in England-Italy 3-2 in that game that went down in football history as the Battle of Highbury: in a period in which no national had never managed to beat the English in their home blues, forced playing a man down in the second minute of the game and trailing by three goals from the twelfth touched the tie at the end of the game, with Ceresoli who parried a penalty for the game showed the blues in the game were remembered as the "Lions of Highbury." Then he won the World Cup in 1938, where, however, did not play: in fact been the victim of a new accident took part in the world cup as a reserve goalkeeper. In total he played 8 games for the National Team. His first coach was important withAtalanta, but the start of the season was not so happy, then came to put pressure on society to provide reinforcements for the attack of Atalanta, who led the management to buy the captain of Swedish National Hasse Jeppson: The purchase proved to be successful, the team moved from third to last place in the twelfth to the end of the season and the player was sold for the then considerable sum of 105 million at Napoli the following year went to Salernitana who came 11th in Serie B, but later returned to coach the company in Bergamo, 11th in Serie A in the 1963-1964 season with him leading. Carlo Ceresoli died on 22/04/1995 as the last survived from the "Lions of Highbury".
