Onofri was a sweeper or centre back. He played mostly for Genoa: 215 matches and three goals from 1976 to 1985 − in the middle the 1978-79 season at Torino. He played also for other clubs including Pro Vercelli, Avellino and Catania. He retired in 1986.
Onofri was a tall and strong defender, able in aerial games and a leader who was Genoa's captain for six seasons. He was quite slow and, despite having a decent technique, he couldn't break through in his early career when he played as inside forward.
