Cattaneo was a right winger who played from 1945 to 1956 for several clubs: Como, Cremonese, Vicenza, Lucchese, Como again and Catania. Wherever he went, he proved to be a prolific striker throughout his entire career: in 370 matches he scored 112 goals, most of which with Como.
Cattaneo was a fast player, gifted with very good acceleration. He proved to be an assist-man with his efficient crosses and through passes. Despite playing on the flank, he often moved inside the box to receive the ball or to make a tap-in after a save from the goalkeeper. When he didn't run towards the goal, he may move in a central position at the edge of the penalty area to shoot; his shots from the distance were insidious, a mix of power and accuracy. He showed also a good shot technique whenever he tried volleys or overhead kicks, which sometimes were effective.
