Berggreen was a midfielder who could cover all positions but his primary one was in the center. His career began in 1975 at Lyngby. In 1982 he joined Pisa, where he probably had the best time of his career. A legend of the club, he played for the Nerazzurri 150 matches and scored 32 goals in four seasons. Then he had a good year at Roma and one at Torino before coming back to Lyngby, where he retired in 1990 after two seasons. He won 46 caps for Denmark, scoring 5 times.
Tall and slender, Berggreen was an excellent player gifted with determination and fighting spirit that made him a fan favourite. Mostly offensive, he was helpful also for the defence thanks to his good speed. Left-footed but accurate with the right as well, he was gifted with remarkable technique and a powerful shot. His main characteristics were his great heading ability and timing inside the box as well as the unselfishness because, despite the fact that he scored a good amount of goals, he preferred being a player who gave everything for the squad.
