INFORobert Schlienz was one of the best German players in the late 40's and 50's despite the fact he lost his left forearm (it had to be amputated) in a car accident in 1948 at the age of only 24. Robert started to play as the striker and was prolific scorer, in 1945-1946 Schlienz scored fantastic 46 goals in 30 games, an absolute record in Germany. But after the tragic accident Robert was moved much deeper in midfield and he became the main playmaker of the team. He was not mobile and fast like before the accident, but made great in playmaking duties, helping in defence and ommanding the play of the team. He had good shot and before and after the accident, but didn't score same amount of goals after the accident like before, because he was moved far from the box to avoid the physical contacts. Robert Schlienz played some games in the season 1944/45 for VfB Stuttgart in the Gauliga. On 14 August 1948 Schlienz had a serious car accident. Because his mother died a day before, he was not in time for the team meeting and had to join him privately for a cup match against Kickers Offenbach in about 70 kilometers away from Stuttgart, Aalen, Germany. On the ride he got from a friend with his rented Opel pickup into a pothole and overturned along with the vehicle. While his left arm which he had previously held due to the intense heat from the open car window was smashed. This had to be amputated. His football career was thus ended, but his former coach Georg Wurzer encouraged him to continue. In special classes, he studied with one Schlienz new training and movement. In addition, Wurzer took back the former center forward position to the external rotor, which if necessary also with himself in the attack was to achieve goals. Less than four months after his accident was Schlienz on 5 December 1948, in a 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich again for Stuttgart on the field. He played from 1945 to 1960 with VfB Stuttgart and was the captain of the most successful team of the association, the German championship twice (1950, 1952) and German Cup twice (1954, 1958). 1955 and 1956, appointed him to the then national coach Sepp Herberger for three games in the German national team, in which Germany beat Northern Ireland, the Netherlands and England took. Robert died on 18 June 1995 at the age of 71 years of a heart attack. His funeral at the cemetery where he lives in Dettenhausen attended in the pouring rain more than 300 mourners. Just a few days after his death, VfB Stuttgart amateur Stadium was named in Robert Schlienz Stadium.
"The best man on the pitch was the one-armed. From what I saw of him, it was unimaginable for me until now"
- Alfredo di Stefano
