INFOSergio Cervato is highly regarded as the best Italian side back in history. He was left back but right footed. Cervato was most known for his ferocious shot which was one of the strongest in the world in his era and in Italy only matched by Luigi Riva. He was free kick specialist as well as excellent penalty taker, he could curle the ball over the wall or round the wall. He was also a first Italian type of "modern" offensive side back which soon was followed by Facchetti and more other players. He was also very fast and elegant player with great anticipating of opponents moves. And after excellent anticipating he'd always burst in counter attack which was also one of his great abilities. He could play immediately long ball forward or carry out the ball alone in counter which often he knew also to conclude with long range rockets. He was also strong in duels and tackling as well in marking which enabled him to play as central defender in later stages of his career, especially in his last years in "viola" jersey and in Juventus where he elegantly commanded the back line. Playing for AC Fiorentina, he often contributed to the Viola's attacks, scoring 31 goals during his 10 years in Florence. In the 1955-1956 season he won 1 title with AC Fiorentina. In the 1955-56 Scudetto Triumph, ACF Fiorentina lost just one game – the very last one at Genoa. In the 1957 European Cup Final a Cervato captained team gave Real Madrid a fright but eventually lost 2-0. Cervato captained Fiorentina. The 1955-56 team is regarded as one of the best Serie A has ever seen and Fulvio Bernardini's men should have won more titles being runners-up in 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. In 1959 Cervato was sold to Juventus against his will and he won 2 more titles with Juventus F.C. in 1959-1960 and 1960-1961 and Coppa Italia in 1959-1960. He closed career in 1965 with Spal Ferrara in Serie B. In Serie A he played 466 matches and scored 45 goals. For Italian national team he got 28 international caps, scored 4 goals and participated at the 1954 FIFA World Cup. After he retired he managed Pescara, Empoli and Fiorentina youth teams. Sergio Cervato died on 09/10/2005 in Firenze aged 76. He will be remembered as an essential part of the best ever Fiorentina generation of players as well as one of the best ever Italian defenders.
Quote:
