INFO:

Murtaz Kalistratovich Khurtsilava is the best ever defender from Eastern Europe and one of the greatest in the history of football. He had fantastic sense of anticipating, enormous strength due to his bulky stature, excellent organizing skills which allowed him to be some kind of defensive playmaker, solid passing and dribbling and very strong shot. He was good in aerial battles as well, despite being little bit fat. He played against many powerful forwards during his playing career and was a killer defender. He gained this reputation with a respected style of play. Speaking of his own style, he explained that if an opponent team has a strongly pronounced player, he should be paid special attention. During his career, Murtaz never forced attackers with aggressive attempts. He preferred to use an easy, preemptive tactic, like stealing opponent’s ball in 2-3 positions back to back, destroying him psychologically, making him doubt his talent. There are also some moments when things didn’t go right for Murtaz Khurtsilava. During 1964 season, he got injured and his state of health only let him to appear in 8 matches. Tragedically he couldn’t recover and missed the chance for a call-up to national squad to European Championship where his team became the champions. He didn’t give up and made it for 1966 World Cup. At the 3rd place game of USSR, while he was marking Portuguese giant forward Torres, he was way shorter than him, in a struggle he handballed. That handball brought Portuguese victory, giving Soviets 4th place. Later on he also was one of the key figures in the 2nd place success of Soviet team in 1972 European Championship. After 1975, he started to play for Torpedo Kutaisi, he still couldn’t accept the fact that he was playing for another team than Dinamo Tbilisi. Even tears fell down from his eyes when he left on the pitch with Torpedo shirt. After a year, he retired from football. In the USSR national team, took 4th place at World Cup 1966. Khurtsilava was one of two Georgian players, who have ever been the captains of national teams of the Soviet Union - with Alexander Chivadze. After completing the game's career has been busy coaching. In 1990, under his leadership, "Guria" of Lanchkhuti won the Cup of Georgia, and in 1995 the club "Samtredia" became vice-champion of the country. From April 1998 to May 1999 coached Dinamo (Tbilisi). C May 1999 - Head Coach of Junior Team Georgia football together since 1999 - head coach of Lokomotiv (Tbilisi). However, the post coach "Locomotive" voluntarily went within 3 months after the devastating defeat of 0:7 in 1 / 32 of the UEFA Cup, perpetrated by the Greek PAOK. In April 2001, after three consecutive defeats, has resigned from his post as head coach. Since August 2001 - together with Otari Gabelia appointed assistant Alexander Chivadze in the national team of Georgia. During his career, became champion of Soviet Top League in 1964, owner of bronze in 1972 Olympics, silver medal winner in European Championship in 1972, was 10 times chosen for squad of 33 best players in USSR. Finally to all these, he was honored by his federation on the 50th anniversary of UEFA and shown as the most successful Georgian footballer in last 50 years in 2003. After a career full of success and honors, he created his own business and leaving peacefully in Tbilisi with his family at the moment.
