Klaus-Dieter Sieloff is former German sweeper. A classic offensive libero, one of the strongest of the 1960s and early-1970s, a defensive anchor with a very strong personality and charisma who helped turn the young, naïve Mönchengladbach side of the 1960s into a serious international contender when he joined them in 1969. An excellent technical player with good positioning and reading of the game, Sieloff’s distribution from the back played a vital part in his rise to stardom as did his surging ahead in a forceful, less elegant way than Beckenbauer, but with similar panache. Obviously Sieloff never had a real chance at a breakthrough in the national team, as even Beckenbauer himself did not get to play in his preferred position in the national team since Helmut Schön for a long time preferred a strictly defensive sweeper (Willi Schulz). Sieloff was strong player, two-footed and good in marking. He had good speed in sprint but not so agile on the short space. He practiced boxing in his eraly years later successfully turned into attacking sweeper who liked to surge forward and score with his powerful shot. A native of Tilsit in East Prussia young players came through the stations Borussia Kiel (to 1954) and FV Rottweil (1954-1959) in 1959 in the youth department of VfB Stuttgart. From 1963 to 1969 Sieloff played 141 Bundesliga games for Stuttgart and scored 21 goals. Sieloff moved in 1969 to Borussia Moenchengladbach. For Mönchengladbach, Sieloff played until 1974 when he moved to Alemannia Aachen, where he remained until 1976. He ended his career in 1977, playing one season for TSG Backnang. After his career, Sieloff became chief of the Mercedes Benz company-facilitated sports activities group. He died in December 2011.
