Given is a former goalkeeper. He spent most of his career at Newcastle United, making 463 appearances from 1997 to 2009. He played also for Blackburn Rovers, Swindon Town, Sunderland, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Stoke City, where he retired in 2007. He gained 134 caps for Ireland, taking part at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and 2012 UEFA Euro.
One of the best goalkeepers in Premier League throughout the 2000s and one of the best Irish ever in his position, Given possessed great athletic qualities such as good agility and outstanding reflexes. He was very good at anticipating his opponents and brave in 1-on-1 situations when coming out of the goal. He was gifted with strong handling of the ball as well as excellent goalkeeping skills and commanded his area quite well. Sometimes accused to lack of efficiency at catching crosses, he also wasn't flawless, occasionally alternating fantastic saves to quite embarassing mistakes.
