Cassani is a former right back, who could play also as left back or, in case of emergency, as centre back. He began his professional career at Juventus, playing though only once in 2002. He had his best time at Palermo, where he made 188 appearances from 2006 to 2011, scoring twice. He played also for Sampdoria, Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Genoa, Parma and Bari, where he retired in 2018. He gained 11 caps for Italy.
Cassani was a very good side back, gifted with fine strength, speed and technique, excellent stamina and determination. He was capable in both attack and defence but he was especially efficient when he pushed forward. He was alright when facing opponents 1-on-1, showing decent dribbling skills even though his movements weren't very quick. He often reached the opposing half and delivered crosses, which were accurate but usually lacked of speed.
