INFO:

Roland Sandberg is former Swedish striker. He played either on wing or in the middle, he was very fast player with good crosses, most of Kaiserslautern goals were scored after Sandbergs runs and crosses. Besides he had solid body strength and was also good scorer. Sandberg's play in FF-shirt did not go unnoticed and the age of 23 he was sold on to Åtvidabergs FF was on the route the march in Swedish football. He formed, together with Ralf Edstrom feared attacking duo both on the club team and national team. Sandberg won the Premier Division top scorer twice, in 1971 and 1972, and became Swedish champion with Åtvidaberg 1972 before he turned pro in 1972 in German FC Kaiserslautern. In the Bundesliga, he made 60 goals in 118 games during four years at the club. Sandberg played during his career, also 37 games in the Swedish national team and scored 15 goals. This is Sandberg, for the average person, probably best known as the player who fired Sweden to the 1974 World Cup through its 2-1-goal in the crucial qualifying match against Austria in late autumn 1973rd This is a classic snow-covered plan in Gelsenkirchen. He was then one of the great Swedish profiles in the coming playoffs in 1974, where Sweden finished in fifth place. Unfortune hit Sandberg, it would appear, in his last international match, in 1976 (16 June, World Cup qualifier against Norway), a serious injury when he collided with an opponent and turned the broken right knee. He was operated "at home" in West Germany with the result that the knee was a little "loose". Despite this, he could play the following season before the knee fully speak out. Only 30 years old, he was now classified as "football disability" and was able to redeem their professional liability insurance. Sandberg went through this spring another operation, this time in Sweden, and now with better results. He moved back to Sweden and began to gently train his knee. On the New Year 1979, it felt so good that he decided on a comeback - Kalmar FF. The first year back in Sweden was successful. Sandberg played all 26 games for the KFF and ended up on a shared 5th place in the top scorer with 11 goals. It was now even talk of a comeback in the national team for him. It was, however, nothing. The knee began to bother him by recurrent swelling up. Late autumn 1981, he made his last game - for Racing Club in 2nd Division. Sandberg was known for his calm manner and sportsmanship spirit. Throughout his career, he was booked only two times. Sandberg couldn't, as many other great players, leave football completely so between 1982-1985 he was the coach of IFK Malmö.
