After playing most of his career as center midfielder, Arão was repositioned as defensive midfielder by the coach Jorge Jesus, due to his characteristics as a player. Also, because Jesus understood that he was better playing facing the opponent's goal than receiving the ball with his back to the goal to turn and pass.
Despite the difficult start in understanding his new position on the field and coach's game idea, Arão had great performances in 2019 and 2020 at Flamengo. First year mostly as defensive midfielder and second mostly as center-back, position defined by the coach Rogério Ceni.
