INFO:Ali Gagarin is a former centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at Al-Hilal Omdurman, playing there from 1966 to 1975, from 1976 to 1978 and in 1979-80, scoring a total 350 goals. He's still Al-Hilal's top ever scorer. He played also for Saudi team Al-Nassr in 1975-76 and Ivorian team Stade d'Abidjan in 1978. He capped for Sudan at least 33 times, scoring not less than 13 goals, and winning the 1970 African Cup of Nations, where he scored against Ethiopia but wasn't featured in the final. He captained the national team numerous times. His best season was the 1975-76 as he scored 11 of Sudan's 13 total goals. Ali's brother Jaafar Gagarin was a left-back and he as well represented Sudan, mostly in the late 1960s.
One of the most prominent and prolific players in Sudan's history, Ali Gagarin earned his nickname due to his meteoric rise that was compared to cosmonaut Yuriy Gagarin. Ali was the kind of player who put determination and high technical level at the service of his team, relying on creativity, strong legs, accurate dribbling and shooting ability. And he was one of the fastest strikers inside the box when he had to reach the goal quickly. Also, he would always follow the orders from his coach. Therefore, he booked himself a sure place in Al-Hilal's starting team. One of most known and feared centre forwards in all Africa, he rarely finished a match without scoring at least once to the point that his opponents usually considered the game starting with a 1-0 disadvantage only for Ali Gagarin's presence alone. Of his many legendary performances, the fans remember especially the one with Sudan in a match won 1-0 against Egypt in 1975 when he received the ball in the area, dribbled a defender with a low flick with the right foot and scored with the left.
