Mweene Is a former goalkeeper. His career started in 2003. He played in Zambia for Lusaka Celtic, Lusaka Dynamo, and Kitwe United before moving to South Africa in 2005, signing for Free State Stars. He spent eight seasons with the club, making 191 appearances and scoring 11 goals. He then joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2013, being a reserve for most of his stint with the team, playing 120 matches in a decade. He retired in 2023. Zambia record-man for appearances, he capped for the national team 122 times, scoring 2 goals and winning the 2012 African Cup of Nations. He was named best goalkeeper of the tournament.
Considered one of the best African goalkeepers of the 2000s and early 2010s, Mweene was distinguished by his excellent goalkeeping skill that enabled him to block most shots decisively. He was particularly effective when he came off his line, showing courage and the ability to collect high balls, anticipating incoming strikers and sometimes getting hit in the process. He would even leave his area when necessary in order to kick the ball away. He could also rely on a solid ball distribution. His long passes were especially good, always fast and usually accurate as they forced opponents to intercept them before they could reach the targeted player. An expert in saving penalties, he was also a good penalty taker who scored 13 times from the spot in his career. His ability was crucial in the 2012 African Cup as he saved a penalty in the semifinal against Ghana and one in the shootouts of the final against Ivory Coast.
