Fred Wheldon began his career with local clubs in Birmingham before making his name at Small Heath (later Birmingham City), where his prolific goal-scoring earned him a move to Aston Villa in 1896. At Villa, Wheldon became a key player in one of the club's most successful periods, helping them win the First Division title in 1896–97 and the FA Cup in 1897. He later had spells with West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers before retiring. Wheldon was also capped four times scoring six goals for England.

Wheldon was known as the finest of his type and famous for his dribbling, creativity, bursting speed and sharp finishing with both head and feet. His intelligent movement and ability to link play made him a constant attacking threat. Additionally, he frequently dropped back to support the halfbacks, using his strong tackling skills effectively.
