INFO:Papa Camara was an attacking midfielder and striker. He spent his entire careet at Hafia FC between 1970 and 1986 during the club's golden era, reportedly scoring 142 goals in 532 appearances. He represented Guinea 42 times between 1971 and 1985, scoring 6 goals.
Considered one of the best African players of the 1970s and one of greatest Guinean players of all time, Camara was a tall, elegant and technically skilled midfielder who had the rare gift of mastering the ball with every part of his body, from head to chest to toes. He was a fine scorer but left his mark for his complicated dribbling, charming body feints, brilliant passes and vision of the game. His talent and commitment earned him the captain role of the Guinea national team.
He scored a crucial goal against Nigeria on 9th March 1976 in the first match of the Africa Cup of Nations final round, the equaliser at the 88' minute. Guinea eventually also drew against Morocco in the last game of the tournament, finishing runner-up.
Guineans though mostly remember his performance on 28th September 1977. Hafia was playing the second leg of the African Cup of Champions Clubs against the Ghanaian team Hearts of Oak. Hafia had won the first leg 1-0 and Hearts of Oak was leading 2-0 in the second match. Camara animated the forward line with his intelligent, meticulous dribbling, and then he provided the decisive pass for the equaliser. He eventually scored the winning goal.
