Honores began his football career at the Alfonso Ugarte club in Chiclín, in the department of La Libertad.

He was later signed by Universitario de Deportes, where he shared a dressing room with Lolo Fernández, winning the 1939 Peruvian Football Championship, his third title to that point, and that was enough to earn him a call-up to the Peruvian national team.

In 1941, he joined Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. At that time, Peruvian football was still amateur. His first international experience was with the red-and-black team. Honores performed brilliantly for the club, earning the respect and affection of the fans and his teammates. In 1943, he had a falling out with the club's president, ending his contract with the Rosario club. In 1944, he was signed by Club Atlético Platense. He performed poorly for the brown team until 1945, the year he left the club.

In Argentina he played a total of eighty-nine matches. In 1946 he returned to Peru to sign for Centro Iqueño, where he retired in 1949.

He was capped nineteen times by the Peruvian national football team. He made his debut on 16 January 1937, in a match against Argentina that ended 1-0 in favor of the Argentines. He was South American champion in 1939. His last match for the national team was on 7 February 1942, in a 0-0 draw against Chile.

- JUAN HONORES. Ágil y acrobático arquero ascopano, llegó a la “U” en 1936. El 'Chueco' fue campeón nacional en 1939 y ese mismo año fue titular en el pórtico de la Selección Peruana que conquistó la Copa América.

- Para la crítica de la época se trataba de un gran elemento en el arco, tenía talla, transmitía seguridad, era ágil y de reacciones inmediatas. Es por ello, que fue calificado por el diario La Crónica como “el Señor de los 3 palos”.

- El fútbol no estuvo relacionado con Juan Honores Mostejo (Ascope, 4 de marzo de 1915) toda una vida. Cuando estudiaba en el Centro Escolar N° 243 de su tierra natal, su deporte favorito era otro: el básket. Sin embargo, su estilo era particular: le gustaba lucirse y estilizarse todo lo posible con el balón, como imitando -sin querer, pues aún no eran conocidos en esa época- a los famosos Globetrotters. Eso irritó progresivamente a su profesor, quien lo separó del equipo. Y por eso, acabó confinado a otro espacio en el que podría seguir agarrando la pelota pero, acabo, tendría mejores opciones de ser vistoso: el arco.

- En 1935, el Alfonso Ugarte de Chiclín llegó a Lima en una de sus giras habituales. Lo hizo con Honores en el arco y su estilo sofisticado causó de inmediato admiración entre los aficionados, que comenzaron a ver en su figura desgarbada y azambada a un arquero diferente. Sus piernas arqueadas, de inmediato, le granjearon el apodo que lo acompañaría toda la vida: 'Chueco'.

- Pero tenía un defecto: sus saques de meta no eran los más agradables, por así decirlo; casi siempre dependía de un jugador del equipo para reiniciar el partido.

- Así, "Chueco" se apoderó de la portería calamar, que defendió solo 12 veces esa temporada, hasta que una lesión de menisco comenzó a afectar su rendimiento. Hizo su última atajada contra Boca Juniors, y sus piernas dijeron basta: era hora de despedirse del fútbol, ​​temprana e inesperadamente.

Su consagración definitiva la alcanzó en el Campeonato Sudamericano de Lima, en 1939, cuyo título lo ganó el seleccionado peruano, teniendo en Honores a uno de sus mejores valores. El técnico inglés, Jack Grenwell lo prefirió como titular, manteniendo en la banca a Soriano y a Valdivieso. ¡Qué tal lujo!.

Totalmente opuesto a Soriano, la conducta de Honores en la cancha era burlona y hasta procaz. No obstante tuvo actuaciones descollantes en el Newells Old Boys de Rosario, Argentina, y se alzó por encima de los grandes jugadores que el club tenía en esa época. Tan recordado como Soriano.

Well, just because "Brazil was eliminated" doesn't mean that 1939 is any less important in our football history, nor does it mean that more competitive teams like Brazil and Argentina are absent.

Furthermore, it's the competition with the fewest players, and Alianza Lima contributed to the national team, with a total of three representatives who didn't even make the starting lineup. At that time, the most competitive teams were Deportivo Municipal, Sport Boys, and Universitario de Deportes, especially the so-called "Muni," which was the greatest exponent of our football during the 1940s. There's no doubt or discussion about this. Between 1940 and 1950, they won three championships and five runner-up finishes. Universitario was the other team with the most victories, with a total of four championships and two runner-up finishes.
