Matsima was a goalkeeper. He spent his entire career in his native country Congo, playing for Diables Noirs from 1961 to 1978. A member of the Congo national team for fifteen years, he represented the country from 1963 up to his retirement and won the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations.
Arguably the greatest goalkeeper in Congo's history, Matsima was athletic, agile, gifted with excellent reflexes and jumping ability. Sometimes reckless when coming off the goal, he would always attempt to punch a cross away or anticipate an opposing striker. He was overall safe between the posts and capable of deflecting most shots, especially low ones. On the other hand, his reach on high angled shots wasn't always equally good. Comfortable with his feet, he could provide his teammate with accurate goal kicks.
