Lamagni is a former right back and later also sweeper and centre back. He spent almost his entire career at Cagliari, making 337 appearances from 1971 to 1985 ─ excluding the 1973-74 season at Empoli and the 1974-75 at Sassari Torres ─ scoring 5 goals. Lamagni was a short but tough defender, gifted with great determination. He committed though several fouls due to his rough playstyle. Even the most feared strikers had troubles against him. Not easy to dribble, he could defend successfully against the likes of Pierino Fanna, Giuseppe Galderisi and Pietro Virdis among others. He used to challenge the bigger strikers by waiting them instead of pressing. He possessed good sprint, could recover balls from the opponents or save them on the goal-line, sometimes even with acrobatic kicks. He could support the attack well with decent crosses or shots. He scored an incredible goal with a bicycle kick from near the edge of the box against Ascoli in 1981.
