His international debut came on October 22, 1967 in the match Spain 2-1 Czechoslovakia, with coach Sunday Balmanya, scoring the second goal Garate of Spain. Garate played eighteen matches for his country, sixteen of them with Ladislao Kubala on the bench, scoring a total of five goals.
