He was the youngest member of that team, being barely 20 years old when the title was won. Elder was a player of good technical quality, comfortable in possession and liked to go forward. His passing was very solid, and with his good dribbling he could play his way out of trouble. He wasn't as reliable defensively as his fellow fullback John Angus but he more had a strong base of fundamental skills which made him a good all-rounder. He even had a pretty good scoring record with a powerful shot. Unfortunately he had injury problems and disagreements with Burnley management led to him leaving at only 26, after which he was never the same player. For Northern Ireland he earned 40 caps.
