Inter Miami was founded in 2018. The team played its first season in 2020. While Inter Miami is its own franchise and isn't a direct successor to any other club, its closest spiritual predecessor is Miami Fusion, team that existed from 1997 to January 2002.
It has to be said, though, that Miami Fusion was also founded to fill the void left by the dissolution of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1997. The Strikers existed from 1976 ─ following the rebranding of the Miami Toros ─ to 1997, but they were also brought back in 2006 under the name Miami FC before using the name Fort Lauderdale Strikers again from 2010 to 2016.
Inter Miami as well was founded two years later to make up for the absence of a professional team in the city of Miami. Therefore, given that Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Miami Fusion, and Inter Miami existed in separate eras, they could be considered spiritual successors to one another.
