Heintze is a former left back or left midfielder ─ also a left winger in his early career. He spent most of his career at PSV, making 508 appearances and scoring 7 goals in two spells, from 1982 to 1994 and from 1999 to 2003, when he retired. He also had good seasons at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, playing 109 matches from 1996 to 1999 and scoring 5 times. He gained 86 caps for Denmark, scoring 4 goals.
Heintze was a versatile and consistent player, gifted with speed, agility and great stamina. He also possessed good technique and dribbling. In defence, he proved to be able at covering and delivering good pinpoint passes from the back. He sometimes pushed forward to support the attack, taking advantage of his quickness and skills, exchanging short passes or sending early crosses. During his time at Bayer Leverkusen he was more prone to try shooting on goal, showing a decent first time ability.
