Defence MindedINFO:Lorieri was a goalkeeper. Grown up at Inter, he played for Sangiovannese, Prato and Piacenza before joining Torino, rising from Serie C1 to Serie A. He appeared 193 times for the
Granata from 1986 to 1989 − Torino was relegated and the supporters turned on the goalkeeper. He transferred to Ascoli where he became a symbol: 149 matches, playing in Serie A and Serie B from 1989 to 1993. His great performances convinced Roma to buy him but he played only 27 times in two seasons. He was sold to Lecce in Serie C but in two seasons he helped the team reaching Serie A: 142 matches in total with the
Giallorossi. Then he played for Salernitana, Genoa, Spezia and CuoioCappiano where he retired in 2004.
Lorieri was a very good and goalkeeper who could have become a great one − arguably one of the best Italians ever. He had a good physique, technique and agility, was acrobatic, effective in 1-on-1 situations but also reactive in the goal, could stop very near shots as well as powerful long range ones. He had charisma and always shouted to his defenders, sometimes with too vehemently. Despite being part of two clubs that were relegated − Torino and Ascoli − he made a huge number of saves, flying on the right and on the left. He did his job well. An incredible performance against Roma with a Rizzitelli penalty saved gave him the chance to play for a big club but he didn't have success. Therefore he was labeled as a player for small clubs. In fact at Lecce he was again the goalkeeper he was at Ascoli, saving shots after shots, proving to be an able penalty stopper − 13 penalties saved − and apparently giving the best when his team was losing, letting his teammates overturn the score. A curious anecdote: he's the first goalkeeper to be featured in the cover of the
Panini album and that happened in 1992-93 when he was playing in Serie B.
