Anderton is a former right side midfielder ─ occasionally used on the left ─ comfortable also as attacking or central midfielder. He spent most of his career at Tottenham Hotspur, playing 358 matches and scoring 48 goals from 1992 to 2004 despite suffering numerous injuries ─ especially starting from the 1995-96 season ─ which stopped him from reaching the full potential that many expected. He played also for Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth, retiring in 2009. He gained 30 caps for England, scoring 7 goals and taking part to the 1996 UEFA Euro and 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Anderton was a superb player on the wing, gifted with a tall figure, fine pace, a particular running style, great control of the ball and good dribbling to beat any defender usually with ease. Mainly focused on the attack and comfortable with both feet as well as the outside, he was a deadly finisher with a powerful long range shot but was especially renowned for his vision of the game and ability to deliver very accurate and fast crosses. In fact, he was a corner specialist. He possessed also a decent heading ability.
