Esel was a centre forward. His career began in the early 1940s at Kırıkkalespor and Ankaragücü. He joined Beşiktaş in 1948, scoring 25 goals in 26 matches in two seasons, winning the 1949-50 Turkish Championship. He gained in the same year 4 caps for Turkey, scoring 3 goals. He left Beşiktaş and played a season for Adaletspor before transferring to Spal. He scored 27 times in 78 appearances in Italy between 1951 and 1954. He came back to Beşiktaş for three seasons, playing less regularly than he did in his first experience at the club, scoring 10 goals in 24 games. He retired in 1964. Considered as one of the most successful strikers in the history of Beşiktaş, Esel was especially renowned for being very prolific and for his strong physique as well as his powerful long range shot.
