INFO:Utley was a left-half. He played 196 matches and scored 9 goals for Barnsley from 1907 to 1913. Then, recommended by Billy Gillespie, he joined Sheffield United, where he played 118 games and scored 9 times from 1913 to 1921. He capped once for England in 1913. He retired in 1922 after only a match with Manchester City.
Utley was a strong and dependable half-back. Renowned for his incredibly long throws and gifted with a thunderous shot, he always delivered it from the left flank whenever he could. His best ever goal though, during the 1914-15 FA Cup semifinal against Bolton Wanderers, came after he dribbled from the half-way line before shooting. He was a key player for both Barnsley and Sheffield United, winning an FA Cup with both clubs and leading Barnsley to another FA Cup final. He especially worked hard and with determination throughout the whole final won with Sheffield United, stopping many of Chelsea attacking actions and delivering many passes to the forwards.
