Vialli is a former centre forward, winger and secondary striker. Grown up at Cremonese, he debuted in Serie C1 in 1980. Four years later, he was signed by Sampdoria, where he spent most of his career, playing 328 matches and scoring 141 goals from 1984 to 1992, winning four Italian Cups, the 1989-90 Cup Winners' Cup, the 1990-91 Scudetto and the 1991 Italian Supercup. He then joined Juventus, where he scored 53 goals in 145 games from 1992 to 1996, winning the 1992-93 UEFA Cup, a Scudetto and an Italian Cup in 1994-95, the 1995 Italian Supercup and the 1995-96 UEFA Champions League. He transferred to Chelsea in 1996, playing for three seasons ─ the last two as player-coach ─ scoring 40 goals in 78 matches and retiring in 1999. He gained 59 caps for Italy, scoring 16 goals.
One of the best strikers in the world in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Vialli was a complete attacker. He was gifted with excellent technique and dribbling, great speed and dynamism, very good strength, enough stamina to resist to the efforts and great mentality. In fact, he could solve the match at any moment. He was highly reactive in front of the goal and possessed a fantastic heading ability. Right footed but greatly effective with the left foot as well, his shots were as accurate as they could be powerful. Scoring in spectacular ways and from difficult positions, for example with bicycle kicks or first time shots, was his specialty. He was an able penalty taker ─ 30 penalties scored with Sampdoria ─ and scored some goals also from free kick. During some matches, he was sometimes moved to the midfield in order to take advantage of his tacking back and pressing abilities as well as his very accurate passes, especially long ones from the side.
