Jimmy Scoular was a Scottish footballer, considered a legend at both Portsmouth and Newcastle. He was a right half known as much for his fiery temperament and tough tackling as he was for his excellent passing and playmaking, and was considered one of the best half backs in the country in the late 40s and early 50s. He formed an excellent pair of wing halfs with Jimmy Dickinson at Portsmouth and won two league titles, then moved onto Newcastle who he captained to a FA Cup victory in 1955, giving a man of the match performance in the final. He was a slow and relatively immobile player but a very tough competitor, strong for his size, and when his team had the ball he'd always drift into space so he could hit fantastic cross-field passes to the left wing and the centre forward. His tackling and temper often got him into trouble with referees and the authorities but he was so strong in the tackle that Duncan Edwards described him as "the finest tackler he ever saw", and his competitive spirit drove his teammates on. His playmaking was brilliant and he had excellent vision, always seeing the most intelligent options in an era where lots of players just kicked the ball hard and hoped it reached somebody. He also had a very good first touch that helped him give himself time to set up his frequent long passes, since he wasn't an amazing dribbler and was slow to turn. Despite his ability, he only earned 9 caps for Scotland. After retiring, he managed Cardiff City for almost a decade, leading them to the semi finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup, the furthest any Welsh team has reached in continental competition.
