Gregory was a central midfielder who could play also on the right side of the midfield and the defence. His career began in 1972 in Northampton Town, where he played 187 matches and scored 8 goals in five seasons. Then he played for Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion before joining Queens Park Rangers in 1981. He had in QPR the best period of his career, playing 161 games, scoring 36 goals and capping 6 times for England. After leaving QPR, he played for Derby County, Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers and retired in 1990.
Gregory was a midfielder who participated to both defensive and attacking plays. He was good at recovering the ball but he mostly used to push forward, using his nice speed and very good dribbling to go past his opponents. He distributed the ball very well especially with accurate and fast short passes, was able to use both feet and could deliver long throw-ins with the hands.
