Defence MindedINFO:Sali was a left-back who could play also as centre back. He grew up at Atalanta but never played in the first team. He spent four seasons at Reggina from 1970 to 1974 before joining Foggia. In the second Serie B season with the
Rossoneri, he obtained a Serie A promotion. He played two seasons with the club in the top league and, after a total of 127 matches and 3 goals, he left for Bologna. He played 88 games with the
Felsinei, from 1978 to 1981. He retired in 1983 after a two year spell at Brescia. He played twice for Italy B but never gained any full international cap, probably due to the competition with legends like Facchetti first and Cabrini then.
Sali was a strong but athletic defender, gifted with great stamina, good running ability and decent technique. The marking of the best opponents like Rivera, Mazzola, Antognoni and Claudio Sala was usually assigned to him. He himself stated in an interview that he would've been able to mark even recent wingers like Beckham. Most times the marked player was unable to create any chance for the entire match. Sali was compared to German legend Paul Breitner for position, look and playstyle.
