INFO:Lawler was a left-back or left-half, capable of playing also on the right side. His career began in 1945, playing in Ireland for Drumcondra and Belfast Celtic. He transferred to England in 1949, making 299 appearances for Fulham ─ mostly in Second Division ─ and retiring in 1962. He capped for Ireland 8 times.
Lawler was an offensive full-back but despite that he never scored. He was a stylish player, far more constructive than most defenders of the time. He liked to support the forwards, acting almost as an additional winger alongside Gordon Brice. While he didn't possess notable pace, Lawler was though skillful. Their inclination to turn defence into attack was though often a weakness for Fulham. However, they both did everything they could to stop the opposition's centre forward. Lawler was, in fact, a no-nonsense player. He was tough, solid, stoic, reliable, and made his presence in the air felt. He was a very stable defender as he rarely put a foot wrong. Lawler's main asset though was his extremely long throw-ins that were feared by the opponents as they came to the box as fast as crosses.
