BalancedINFO:One of the biggest Rangers legends, and the Scottish version of John Charles. Derek Johnstone was a unique player in Scottish football, known for his versatility in being able to play as both a centre forward and a centre back with virtually equal ability, as well as being able to fill in as a midfielder. His large physique and fantastic heading ability lent himself well to both positions. While he was naturally a striker and scored 210 goals for Rangers, arguably his most iconic performance was at centre back, where he was an important part of Rangers' win over Dynamo Moscow in the 1972 European Cup Winners Cup at the age of only 18. Despite his large and heavy build, Johnstone also had good pace over long distances and good technique, also being a decent passer. While a large amount of his goals were headers, he also had great shooting ability with both feet, scoring some fantastic volleys. His main problems were his mental weakness both on and off the pitch, which lead to weight issues and his early decline. He also sometimes seemed out of touch with his teammates and often just walked around the pitch being ineffectual. It was sometimes said that Derek was Rangers' best defender and striker at the same time, and he even preferred playing as a centre back. When playing at the back his tackling ability was excellent and his physical presence made him hard to pass. Scotland has probably never produced a player like Derek Johnstone and probably never will have another player so adept at opposite ends of the field.
