INFO:Fernando Lage is a former inside forward. He played from 1944 to 1960 with the club Desportivo de Lourenço Marques, winning three championships between 1944 and 1946 as footballer, five more between 1952 and 1960 as footballer-coach. It's said that he scored 57 goals in 90 matches. He played with Eusébio at the end of the 1950s. Active mainly as inside, it's said that he was seen playing in every other position, even defender and goalkeeper. He practiced also other sports like basketball, tennis and athletics, winning 56 trophies and 108 medals.
Regarded as the greatest ever Mozambican player, Fernando Lage was compared to Eusébio. Benfica's former striker even said that Lage was a way better player and compared him to Alfredo Di Stéfano, adding that he was spectacular when he orchestrated the game in the midfield. He could control the ball perfectly with both feet and in every way, shining with his magic touches. He showed his fantastic technique using feet, chest and head while his vision of the game was simply unique. He mostly created scoring chances rather than scoring himself even though his number of goals may tell different. English legend Stanley Matthews, during a trip to Africa in 1953 to play some matches, played once against Fernando Lage's team and was incredibly surprised when he saw the Mozambican making feints that he never imagined were possible to execute. Matthews considered Lage as one of the best inside forwards he ever played against. Lage was invited to England where he would've had a bright future but refused. The same happened when several Portuguese teams offered him a contract. He had a family, a job, he loved his country and for these reasons he never went abroad.
