INFO:Charly was one of the most talented German players. In 1965 "France Football" selected Gert Dorfel as the best left winger in Europe, ahead of Paco Gento. So talented and so weird. Charly played football for fun, it was hobby for him, not the job. He refused to play for German National Team twice because he didn't have will for playing!! On the pitch he was most known for his fantastic crosses which led to hundreds goals of Uwe Seeler. The duo Charly Dorfel - Uwe Seeler is selected as the best in history of the German football. Charly was very fast player, he run 100 meters in 10,60 seconds in football boots. He had great dribbling, he was also good scorer, very agile with good technique, knew to make excellent cross while at full speed. Started his career in Hamburg in 1959 and remained their outside left for the next eleven years. Gert Dörfel was an extroverted maverick who loved to entertain the crowds with his dribbling tricks. In his peak years (early- to mid-1960s) the German press even compared him to Francisco Gento of Real Madrid. Unfortunate for his international career was Sepp Herberger’s aversion to players with a flamboyant style like Gert Dörfel who also liked to express his opinion outspokenly. In 1965 ‘L’Equipe’ picked him as Europe’s best outside left but that didn’t help his international career as Herberger’s successor Helmut Schön too had not much love for his type of player. Uwe Seeler benefitted a lot from Dörfel’s crosses from the left flank. In his 325 games for HSV (224 of them in the league), he even scored 107 goals (58 League). With Hamburger SV was Dörfel each time German champion (1960) and DFB-Cup winner (1963). In 1968 he was in the finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup (HSV - AC Mailand 0:2). The HSV was selected as a finalist of the DFB Cup final (HSV - FC Bayern Munich 0:4) participated in the contest. On 28 August 1971 Dörfel played his last Bundesliga match, HSV - FC Schalke 04 0-1. After the retirement, he settled in Seevetal near Hamburg.
