Defence MindedINFO:Riccardo Ferri is a former centre back. He spent almost his entire career at Inter, playing 418 matches from 1981 to 1994, scoring 8 goals. He retired two years later after a short spell at Sampdoria. He capped 45 times for Italy, scoring 4 goals.
Ferri was a strong, tenacious, fighting and implacable defender. He had remarkable speed, good basic technique and could use both feet but rarely helped for the set up of the play. Instead, he was very focused and careful on the defensive phase, even though he occasionally made own goals, lost the ball or simply let his guard down due to a distraction. One of the most feared defenders in Serie A, he oppressively marked his opponent for the entire match. In fact, legend Marco van Basten considered him as one of the greatest in that aspect alongside Pietro Vierchowod, Jürgen Kohler and Giuseppe Bergomi. Ferri also had a remarkable sense of anticipation and was almost unbeatable in the air. Gifted with a powerful long range shot, he occasionally took free kicks.
