INFO:Chiarugi is a former winger and occasionaly a secondary striker. He played for Fiorentina from 1965 to 1972, scoring 56 goals in 193 matches and winning the 1968-69 Serie A. He transferred to Milan in 1972, making 154 appearances and scoring 60 times in four seasons. He played also for Napoli, Sampdoria and Bologna among others, retiring in 1985. He played for Italy in 3 occasions.
Gifted with impressive speed on long and short distance, agility, excellent ball control and dribbling, Chiarugi was a trickster, who attracted the defenders in the box, overcoming them when they tried to tackle him hard. He was a good finisher, especially in one-on-one, but he also provided numerous assists. Although he was a great passer, he was criticized for his selfishness as he preffered challenging every defender instead of working more with the team. His shots had good power and most of them were low and well placed. Mainly left-footed, he could use the right foot well and was accurate with the outside. Moreover, he was a set piece specialist as several goals came from free kick or even from direct corner. He shot with the inside left, making the ball raise and suddenly go down with great effect. He was effective also as secondary striker, role he filled with the national team as it already had great wingers. Famous is his assist in his debut against East Germany on November 22 1969, when he started a counterattack and assisted for Gigi Riva's diving header. He was often accused of being a diver because he fell easily after every minimum physical challenge. However, he only took advantage of his short physique and the fact that most defenders had hard times at taking the ball from him.
