Bonacina was a very versatile defensive midfielder, capable to play also as central midfielder or on the flanks either in the midfield or defence and when necessary even as centre back. He spent most of his career at Atalanta, playing 326 matches and scoring 18 goals in two spells, from 1986 to 1991 and from 1994 to 1999. In the middle, he played three good seasons at Roma, appearing in 114 games and scoring twice. He retired in 2002.
Bonacina was tireless and gifted with great dynamism as well as determination, running up and down for the entire match to which he added intensity and having a very good consistency. These characteristics overshadowed his clear gaps in terms of dribbling and technique. Even in the rare games where his performance wasn't good enough, his dedication wasn't missing. He was mainly effective at intercepting, interdicting, covering the spaces and marking the most advanced midfielder. He showed a nice kick power in the rare chances where he pushed forward ─ to the opposing box ─ rarer at Roma than they were at Atalanta ─ and tried to shoot.
