Mattrel was a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career at Juventus, playing 113 matches in several spells. He was a first choice between 1957 and 1959 but then played less and less. He probably had his best performances on loan at Palermo, playing 35 games in the 1961-62 season and gaining 2 caps for Italy at the end of it. He played also for Anconitana, Cagliari and Spal, where he retired in 1969. He tragically died in 1976 in a car accident.
A very good goalkeeper, Mattrel was solid in general. He possessed excellent positioning, ability between the posts and was an able penalty saver. He had great agility, reaction and outstanding leap, making him capable to stop difficult shots with spectacular saves. Not very fast nor too effective out of the goal, he had more troubles in 1-on-1 situations or when he had to anticipate an incoming striker.
