Tomasini was a sweeper and centre back. He played mostly for Cagliari, appearing in 201 matches from 1968 to his retirement in 1977 and winning the 1969-70 Scudetto, even though he missed many matches during that season. He played also for Brescia and Reggina.
Tomasini was a physically well prepared defender, gifted with strength and durability although he didn't run too much because he occasionally advanced forward and mostly to deliver accurate long balls from the back. He wasn't though very gifted technically. An example is an own goal he scored after not being able to stop properly a very easy ball. He was strong in the air, had good sense of position and he mainly acted near Comunardo Niccolai to cover and protect the space behind the man marker. Tomasini's physicality sometimes became roughness since he committed several fauls.
