Sun Jihai is a former right back, sometimes deployed on the other side or as wing back, defensive midfielder and centre back. His career began in 1995 at Dalian Shide, where he made 131 appearances and scored 7 goals until 2001 ─ he played unsuccesfully for Crystal Palace in the 1998-99 season. He transferred to Manchester City in 2002, playing 151 matches and scoring 4 times in six and a half seasons, also becoming the first ever East Asian player to score in Premier League and the first ever Chinese player to score in UEFA Cup. He then came back to China, playing for Chengdu Blades, Guizhou Renhe, Chonqing Lifan and Beijing Renhe, where he retired in 2016. He capped for China 80 times, scoring once and taking part to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Sun Jihai was a good defender, mostly offensive minded, gifted with great stamina and running ability, especially with sudden accelerations on short distances. More effective during the attacks, he suffered in the defence, often showing an inability in stopping or anticipating his opponent, having to commit fouls despite possessing an excellent positional sense. On the other hand, he was comfortable with both feet, gifted with tactical awareness, remarkable dribbling and ball control. He was an excellent assist-man, capable of delivering accurate crosses at high speed and with good curling. Thanks to his improvements in passing efficiency and more generally down the wing, he was considered in a mid-tier among the right backs of the Premier League.
