Protti is a former centre forward, secondary striker or winger, occasionally also attacking midfielder in his late career. He spent the majority of his career at Livorno, where he played from 1985 to 1988 and from 1999 to 2005 ─ year of his retirement ─ scoring 140 goals in 304 appearances and leading the team from Serie C1 to Serie A during in second spell at the club. He had his best time though at Bari, where he scored 46 times in 112 matches and was Serie A top scorer in 1995-96 with 24 goals ─ 5 from penalty. He played also for Messina, Lazio, Napoli and Reggiana. He's undoubtedly one of the best strikers to never cap for Italy.
A prolific striker, Protti was right-footed but capable with the left foot too, his shot accuracy was superb and even more was his shot technique. In fact, he could score in acrobacy or from long range with thunderous shots especially on the run. Very quick on long distance, he was gifted also with superb bursts of speed on short space to dribble his opponents by making movements to the inside before shooting or sometimes passing the ball. Short and not very strong, he mainly avoided physical contact with his dribbling and agility but he could also trick his opponents into committing foul. Despite his size, he was very capable in the air, scoring several headers and showing a fine leap as well as excellent opportunism. He was a penalty specialist, who scored 5 penalties during the remarkable 1995-96 season and almost 40 with Livorno. His experience and mentality led Livorno to the two historical promotions from Serie C1 to Serie B in 2001-02 and from Serie B to Serie A in 2003-04, proving to be capable of scoring in any portion of the match, many times solving it.
