In terms of natural qualities, he was like few people in those years close to today's football: movement, amount of work and at the same time technique, vision of the field. A rare combination - a destroyer and a technician in one person. He played right or central midfielder - in his penalty area, in someone else's, always fighting. It was unthinkable for him to stop. Sakharov designed the game and created a lot of chances for forwards. His endurance was excellent, he could run like crazy, hitting both from his left leg and from his right.

He started playing football in the village. 116 km of Kuibyshev in the youth team "Neftyanik". In 1966, he played for "Tyazhmash" Syzran , in 1967 - in the "Krilya Sovyetov". Coaches recommended Vladimir to the head of the Minsk "Dynamo" Albert Denisenko. Sakharov played in Dynamo from 1968-1973. Despite frequent violations of the regime and addiction to alcohol, he was one of the best players on the team and a favourite of the fans. Since 1971, he played in the youth team of the USSR.

At the end of 1973, he was invited to the Moscow Torpedo, but Dynamo did not want to let him go and, taking advantage of the facts of Sakharov's numerous misconduct, imposed a disqualification on him. He had to play for the ZIL championship. Vladimir Sakharov was out of big football for a year and a half. When, in 1975, he was finally able to dress in Torpedo colors, specialists and fans were convinced that Ryzhiy had not forgotten how to play. One can only guess what the scale of his talent was, if, despite all the violations and such a long downtime, he received an invitation to the national and Olympic teams, played first violin in the championship and subsequent bronze seasons of Torpedo, scored in the national team and European competitions. Sakharov played for the team until the end of his career in 1981.

In 1975-1976 he played 3 matches and scored 3 goals for the Olympic team and 4 matches for the main one.
