INFO:One of the strongest football players in the USSR in the 1970s. He was distinguished by versatility, technique, accurate passing and a strong long-range shot.
One of the few players who were called up to the USSR national team, a participant in the 1972 European Championship, from the club of the first league, where Shakhtar Donetsk was then staying. A native of Krasny Luch, in the Luhansk region, got to Kyiv on the second attempt. He dismissed the first one at the age of 18, according to contemporaries, being careful not to join the star team of Viktor Maslov. But having arrived at Dynamo as an already established 25-year-old football player (1975), he hit the nail on the head. Anatoly Konkov, having barely moved to Dynamo, instantly turned out to be his own in the simulated ensemble. Not only because Konkov was technical, energetic, and brave. It was different: the coaches received a footballer whose playing style resembled the famous Franz Beckenbauer. Either Konkov is a typical stopper, in another case he is a midfielder. But he is always an indispensable participant in the attack. Konkov already at Shakhtar stood out for his organizational skills. And this was extremely important for a modern team, collectively defending and attacking.
The skills of the former midfielder helped the all-rounder Konkov, as a stopper, to be recognized as the best in the Union for four consecutive seasons (1975-1978), in total he was included in the top 33 - 9 times. Not only was he reliable defensively, but he also knew how to turn his team's attacking manoeuvres, while also possessing good dribbling, passing skills and placed shots. Konkov combined many strong playing qualities, but, above all, skilful tackling of the ball and a well-placed first pass. In the words of Valery Lobanovsky from "Endless Match": “I still have no doubt that Konkov is a player of the level of Franz Beckenbauer. He is impeccable in tackling the ball, his passes are accurate, timely and directed to the right place.” With an injury to Fomenko, a tandem of Kyiv coaches decided on an experiment: Konkov was pushed to the rear, almost to the goalkeeper. Konkov was to prevent all dangers in his own penalty area and in front of it, as well as to start attacks of his team with the first long-range pass. Fortunately, the excellent vision of the field allowed Anatoly to cope with such a task.
Silver medallist of the European Championship-1972. Despite the years spent triumphantly in Kyiv and winning four champion titles, the USSR Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, Anatoly's playing career developed in a bizarre way over time: equally at Shakhtar and at Dynamo. Therefore, until now, he does not give the advantage to any of these teams. Probably not sure which one is better for him.
