INFO:Defensive left back with a ferocious left foot, who would also be used at centre-back position. Solid heading ability, not that fast but covering the line very well. Houston was distinguished by his very strong shot and sharp crosses and known for his low long free kicks. He would always give his very best for the Reds.
Bought for £35,000 from Brentford in 1973, Stewart Houston was the go-to full-back during the 70s. He was a very reliable defensive player and could also provide quality in the offensive sector. Indisputable and imperial holder on the left of the defense throughout the period under the management of Tommy Docherty, he also participated in the club's rise to Division 1 at the end of the 1974-1975 season. Unfortunately, a torn ankle ligament and Arthur Albiston 's rise to prominence around 1977 forced him to move to Sheffield United at the end of his contract in July 1980.
Despite his obvious qualities as a full back, Houston won surprisingly few representative honours for his nation, collecting one single senior cap in a 3-1 win against Denmark at Hampden Park in an European Championship Qualifier on the 29th of October 1975.
