Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Attack MindedINFO:Johan Devrindt (also De Vrindt) was a physically strong player with a very strong shot, excellent response and especially capable of scoring rebound goals. Not very movable nor too fast, he was a constant threat in the opposing box. Originating between a centre and right forward (not a true winger, more acting as a 2nd striker on the right side), De Vrindt started with the youth of VV Overpelt Fabriek, but was soon attracted by top club RSC Anderlecht. There, Devrindt made his debut in the first team in 1964, staying with the Brussels club for six seasons. He won the championship with Anderlecht four times in a row and the Belgian Cup once. He managed to reach with them the final of 1970 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, scoring in the first match against Arsenal, however being runners-up after the 2nd leg.
In 1970, De Vrindt moved to the Netherlands and played for PSV Eindhoven. He scored there 26 goals in two seasons. Two years later, De Vrindt returned to Belgium and played for Club Brugge. In his first season, he won the Dutch championship with the blue and black, but he left in 1974. This time, De Vrindt stayed in Belgium. He went on to play for KSC Lokeren. De Vrindt played every game and scored 27 goals in two seasons. In this way, he equalled his goal difference from Club Brugge.
In 1976, at the age of 32, De Vrindt left for FC Winterslag for four seasons. There, too, he became a fixture in the first team. In 1980, he joined La Louvière, which then played in the Second Division. In 1981, De Vrindt started at KVK Tienen, but in 1982 he stopped playing football at the age of 38. In the first division, he played a total of 370 games and scored 149 goals.
Johan Devrindt made a total of 23 appearances for the Belgian national team, scoring 15 goals. Devrindt made his debut in September 1964 in a friendly against the Netherlands for the Belgian national team, which consisted exclusively of players from RSC Anderlecht after goalkeeper Jean-Marie Trappeniers came on as a substitute. In 1970 he was in the squad for the World Cup in Mexico, where he played in the preliminary round matches against El Salvador (3-0) and Mexico (0-1). In the qualifying matches for the 1972 European Football Championship, he scored both goals for Belgium in the preliminary round matches against group opponents Denmark in a 2-0 win in Bruges on 25 November 1970 and in the 2-1 second leg in Copenhagen on 26 May 1971. However, after successfully qualifying, Devrindt was not called up to the Belgium squad for the finals on home soil. He played his last international match on 27 September 1975 in the qualifying match for the 1976 European Championship against East Germany.
