INFO:Banda is a former goalkeeper. Allegedly of Malawian origins, he spent his entire career in South Africa, mostly with Orlando Pirates, team he helped winning numerous titles in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a candidate for South African Footballer of the Year several times. He represented South Africa XI in some occasions during the 1970s.
Considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in South Africa's football history, Banda was a bit controversial for his oversized personality and trick that consisted in faking an injury before the match and then replace the supposedly starting goalkeeper at the last moment. Regarded as the greatest shot-stopper to ever play for Orlando Pirates, Banda was also distinguished by unorthodox style of play, flying saves, natural flair, immense charisma, eccentric displays between the posts, and cheeky antics that still won him many admirers. He possibly made his greatest save on a header from Kaizer Chiefs striker Jimmy Joubert as the goalkeeper initially dove in the wrong direction but changed it mid air to catch the ball at full stretch. Unfortunately, Banda was also known for his fiery attitude that often got him on the wrong side of referees and administrators.
