Attack/Defence Awareness Card: Defence MindedINFO:Lakis Nikolaou is a former Greek footballer, defensive leader of the AEK Athens team that reached the semi final of the UEFA Cup in 1977. With Petros Ravousis he formed one of the best defensive partnerships in Greek football. Nikolaou actually started his career as a striker and even made his debut for Greece in that position, but in 1974 was moved to the defence and there he thrived. He was a good organiser of the defence, a strong physical presence and was fantastic in the air with an excellent leap. He could also send some decent long passes forward, and sometimes joined the attack as an extra player in the box, retaining some of his old striker's instincts. On the other hand he wasn't very mobile and quite limited technically. During his football career, Nikolaou studied medicine at Athens University and even achieved a PhD there and became a surgeon, being one of the foremost experts on cruciate ligament transplants. He became AEK's club doctor after his retirement and still to this day he operates on their players. With the Greek national team he earned 15 caps and played in the 0-0 draw with West Germany at Euro 1980.
